Protect Your Skin with Natural Sunscreen

Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the United States. More than one million new cases are diagnosed each year. For safe summer fun, you want to protect your skin, and the skin of your little children.

Protection from the sun means blocking not only UVB radiation, but UVA radiation too, too. And it also means steering clear of suspect chemicals that the Food and Drug Administration and manufacturers might tell us are okay, but environmental watchdogs and scientists believe are suspect—ingredients like oxybenzone (which could disrupt the human hormonal system), and Vitamin A (retinyl palmitate), which may boost skin cancer risk, although so-called “reputable magazines” have reported otherwise.

According to the Environmental Working Group, mineral sunblocks (those containing zinc or titanium) are the safest options on the market. Since some of these are expensive, The Daily Green (one of my favorite websites for green tips) did a cost comparison and came up with a list of 21 the best mineral sunblocks selling for $6 an ounce of less. If you can’t find them locally, each of these sunblocks is available at amazon.com. Here is that list.

MexiTan and Tropical Sands Sunscreens--the cheapest on the list selling for $2.19 per ounce for SPF 30.
