Top Ten Everyday Pollution Solutions
April 13-26, 2008
Small Steps:
From my favorite, most reliable website: www.ewg.org.
- When you cook, use cast iron pans instead of nonstick.
-
To avoid chemicals leaching into food, go easy on processed, canned or fast foods and never microwave plastic.
-
Buy organic,
or eat vegetables and fruit from the "Cleanest 12" list.
Find out more about the "Dirty Dozen." at
www.ewg.org.
-
Use iodized salt to combat chemical interference
from the thyroid.
-
If you have
outdoor wooden structures made of pressure treated wood,
seal them so they dont leach arsenic--ewg.org tells you how.
-
Leave your
shoes at the door. This cuts down on dust-bound
pollutants in the home.
-
Avoid
perfume, cologne and products with added fragrance.
-
Buy products
with natural fibers, like cotton and wool, that are
naturally fire resistant.
-
Eat
low-mercury fish like tilapia & pollock, rather than high-mercury choices like tuna & swordfish.
-
Filter water
for drinking and cooking. Search the tap water database
at ewg.org to find out what is probably contaminating your tap water.

PROJECT:
Calculate Your Ecological Footprint |
|
|
|
How much space does your lifestyle require? Find out.
Calculate your own ecological footprint by taking the quiz
at
www.myfootprint.org.
Then, you can compare your Ecological Footprint to what the
planet can sustain.
Adjusting your entries or playing with the Reduce Your
Footprint calculator will show how lifestyle changes affect
the Footprint size. Enter simple goals for your life on the
Action Calculator (such as a pledge to eat less meat) and
find out how many acres of land you could save just by
implementing that goal. Post your goals in a place where you
can see and review them every day. |
